Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930) abandonne l'exercice de la médecine pour se consacrer à l'écriture. En créant le personnage de Sherlock Holmes, il est considéré comme le père du roman policier moderne. Ecrivain prolifique, il donne une ouvre variée, touchant au roman historique (Le Brigadier Gérard), d'aventures (Le professeur Challenger), à la boxe ou au spiritisme.
