Résumé

Mammography is a special type of X-ray imaging that uses low dose X-ray; high-contrast, high-resolution film; and an X-ray system that is designed specifically for mammography to create detailed images of the breast. Technological advances towards digital mammography will not diminish the skips and expertise required of the health professionals practising in this field. Breast cancer continues to be a major cause of female deaths in the Western world and the incidence is now increasing in other countries. Mammography is recognised by the US Food and Drug Administration and the UK, European and Australasian authorities as being in the front line in the detection of breast cancer. Mammography can identify breast cancer at an earlier stage than any other modality. Early detection and appropriate treatment are the two main factors influencing breast cancer survival. In the words of one of the reviewers of the first edition: 'a further edition of this book will be an important contribution to the continuing education and practice of breast care, and in particular mammography'. Fundamentals of Mammography is a practical and comprehensive guide to obtaining high-quality mammography through efficient, sensitive management of the patient and a thorough understanding of mammographic positioning and projections and their anatomical basis. It includes chapters on basic mammographic interpretation and an outline of radiological procedures. It follows a step-by-step approach and includes over 150 images.
