Résumé

Francophone Literatures : a literary and linguistic companion is an accessible and student-friendly guide to the key literary texts of the French-speaking world. The book is divided into four sections, corresponding to the major divisions of the francophone world - North Africa, Black Africa and the Indian Ocean, the Caribbean, and North America. Each section comprises : • A brief introduction outlining the political and literary history of the francophone zones. • Seven key extracts from major literary works. The extracts have been carefully selected to present a chronological picture of the development of the literature and to represent writing by both men and women. • A Text and Context commentary which provides a literary and historical background to each extract and outlines its principal aesthetic, social, cultural and political features. • A Language and Style commentary which demonstrates the most significant linguistic and stylistic characteristics. The commentary is based on a detailed analysis of five linguistic levels - phonology, graphology, lexicology, syntax and the text as a whole. Francophone Literatures : a literary and linguistic companion will be an invaluable resource for all students of French.
