Plant Diversity Of An Andean Cloud Forest. Checklist Of The Vascular Flora Of Maquipucuna, Ecuador

This inventory summarizes the vascular flora of the Bosque Protector Maquipucuna and adjacent areas, in Canton Quito, Provincia Pichincha, Ecuador. Within the boundaries of the floristic region (approximately 00°00' to 00°10' N and 78°35' to 78°41' W), the total area is about 22,000 ha, of which about 4,500 ha lie within the Maquipucuna reserve. The steep and dissected slopes of most of the area, lying between elevations 1100 m and 2800 m, are covered with lower montane and upper montane Andean cloud forest which receives over 3000 mm of precipitation per year. The total vascular flora recorded in this checklist, based on about 5,200 collections, includes 155 families, 621 genera, and approximately 1,640 species, including 228 species of pteridophytes. The flora is rich in epiphytic taxa, especially Araceae, Bromeliaceae, Orchidaceae, Ericaceae, Gesneriaceae, and many ferns. The number of clearly exotic species (44) is very low. In its composition, the Maquipucuna flora resembles that of the Choco area in Colombia, and it may be regarded as representing the southern terminus of the Choco flora on the western slopes of the Ecuadorian Andes. Este inventorio presenta un resumen de las plantas vasculares que se encuentran en el Bosque Protector Maquipucuna y sus alrededores, en Canton Quito, Provincia Pichincha, Ecuador. Dentro de los limites de la region floristica (aproximadamente 00°00' a 00°10' N y 78°35' a 78°41' O), el area total es de aproximadamente 22.000 ha, de las cuales unas 4.500 ha corresponden a la reserva Maquipucuna. Las laderas escarpadas y accidentadas entre 1100 y 2800 m estàn cubiertas con bosque lluvioso montano bajo y alto, los cuales reciben màs de 3.000 mm de precipitacion anual. La flora vascular citada en éste inventorio, se basa en aproximadamente 5.200 colecciones, incluye 155 familias, 621 géneros, y 1.640 especies (incluyendo 228 especies de pteridofitas). La flora es abundante en plantas epifiticas, en particular las Araceas, Bromeliaceas, Orchidaceas, Ericaceas, Gesneriaceas, y numerosos helechos. El numero de especies claramente exoticas (44) es muy bajo. En su composicion la flora de Maquipucuna es similar a la flora de Choco (Colombia) y se le puede considerar como el representante austral de la flora chocoense en las laderas occidentales de los Andes ecuatorianos.
