Résumé

Attempts to understand the way in which cultures use language are central to many areas of academic thought in the latter half of the twentieth century. The Indo-European Languages shows both historically and through an up-to-date description of each language family how one branch of linguistics confronts this issue. The first three chapters provide an important introduction to the general concerns of Indo-European scholarship. The rest of the sixteen chapters are each dedicated to a subgroup of the Indo-European language family. Each addresses the major features of phonology, morphology, syntax and lexicon of the language family. Written by experts in the field from the United States, England, Italy and Germany, The Indo-European Languages fills a major gap in this rapidly changing field. It will be useful to a broad range of readers including students of historical linguistics and comparative philology, modern language students and anyone interested in the processes of language change and evolution. • Highly useful as an introductory survey as well as a standard reference for advanced students and scholars • The only work available which combines the historical understanding of Indo-European with a survey of its various sub-groups
