Résumé

Composite materials have been the most significant revolution in structural mechanics since 1960. This second edition of a classic reference, advanced undergraduate, and graduate text is a balanced introduction to the basic concepts of the mechanical behavior of composite materials and laminated composite structures. Covering topics from micromechanics and macromechanics to lamination theory and plate bending, buckling and vibration, Dr Jones clarifies the physical significance of composite materials.
Throughout, comparisons between theory and experiments serve to establish confidence in the derived theories. Features of Mechanics of Composite Materials include an introduction of stress-strain relations with engineering constants and a comprehensive treatment of micromechanics using both mechanics of materials and elasticity approaches. In addition, the influence of bending-extension coupling and bend-twist coupling on laminated plate deflections, buckling loads, and vibration frequencies is demonstrated for simple problems.
The reputation of the first edition is built upon by including more theory-experiment comparisons, enhanced explanations and figures, additional problems, dual units (SI and US Standard) for international use, and extensive new information on the design of composite structures.
