Résumé

The clothing that people wear provides an extensive and varied resource that gives us information about a period in history. Both its manners and customs, its fashions and traditions are closely linked with the economic and social phenomena of life. Costume reveals not only the aesthetics of a particular time, but also aspects of the social structure. Costume has always attracted the attention of learned specialists such as historians, ethnographers and art critics and served as a source of inspiration for artists, literary men, the theatrical profession, filmmakers and fashion designers nourishing their imagery on the costume of centuries past.
The collection of the State Historv Museum is extensive and diverse. It comprises articles of men's and women's clothing and accessories including both Russian-made and importcd items that were worn by Russians. White not attempting to present a comprehensive and thorough survey of the history of costume in Russia, this book offers the reader an opportunity to see examples of clothing dating from the 15th century to the early 20th century.
The examples include traditional Russian costume which was worn in the countryside as well as urban costume which reflected the influence of Parisian and other Western European fashions. From exuberantly colourful and embellished dresses to elegantly sumptuous brocades and silks, the garments and accessories included in this book are an inspiration. The first part of the book covers traditional Russian dress that was worn by all Russian peasants, by merchants and by the petit bourgeoisie.
The colourful patterns and intricate embroideryof these garments and accessories display both the skill of their creators and the Russian love o£ pattern and design. In fact for a brief period under Catherine the Great, Russian traditional costume was prescribed as the dress code for the imperial court, eschewing the more sophisticated European styles that were in vogue. In the towns and cities, dress was influenced by Western European fashion and especially by the Parisian styles, but interpreted by Russian seamstresses reflecting the love of bright colours, multi-coloured patterns and decorative features in evidence in traditional dress.
The second half of the book covers the garments worn by men and women during the period from the 18th to the early 20th century.
