Where There ls No Doctor has become the most widely used health education text in tropical and subtropical developing countries. The first English language edition for Africa included new material and medical details to make it appropriate to the continent. In addition, the illustrations and the environmental and social factors were changed to the African context. This revised edition for Africa includes information about some additional health problems, HIV and AIDS, dengue, complications from abortion and drug addiction, among many other, and updated advice on topics covered in the first edition.
The edition published in 2009 has been updated throughout, with special attention given to HIV and AIDS, and the information on drugs. Where There ls No Doctor is more than a book on first aid. It covers a wide range of things that affect the health of the villager - from diarrhea to tuberculosis, from helpful and harmful home remedies to the cautious use of certain modern medicines. Special importance is placed on cleanliness, a health diet and vaccinations.
The book also covers in detail both childbirth and family planning. Not only does it help the reader realize what he can do for himself, but it helps him recognize which problems need the attention of an experienced health worker.
